Yogya & Central Java -
With its rich culture, economy hotels and restaurants, it’s a city streamlined for travelers. Well-known as the “main door to traditional Javanese culture”. There are numerous music and dance schools; brilliant choreographers; drama and poetry work-shops; folk theater and wayang troupes. It’s also one of the best places to shop in SE Asia, if you know where to look. The painters and sculptors here are Indonesia’s elite. Yogya remains as a cultural stronghold, filled with the artifacts of an awe-inspiring era. The Sultan is still to be found in the Palace now open to visitors, surrounded by his traditionally garbed Court and Courtesans. Yogyakarta is also a tourist gateway to the province of Central Java which is extremely rich in archaeological sites: ancient Hindu temples (Dieng, Prambanan, Sewu, Plaosan); Buddhist remains (Borobudur & Mendut).
